I saw him with his sacked lunch, made by his loving first wife Hadley, drinking out of a thermos (did they have those in the 1920s?) and tracing those bold brushstrokes with his eyes. I saw Hemingway drinking cups of French coffee at a cafe with black and white pictures on the wall, writing slowly, with lots of crossouts. If we misremembered, they would denounce us before God at those golden gates.īut Dr. They were empty-eyed faces carved into cathedral stone, looking down on us to make sure we knew their names. The authors, if I had imagined them, were like statues in some museum, old cracked marble missing limbs, dust piled atop their heads. In college, I read Faulkner, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and all the other writers infamous among college students everywhere. When my English Literature professor, Marilyn McEntyre, told us Hemingway would write all day in small Parisian cafes and, afterward, take his lunch to the Musée du Luxembourg where he would look at Cezannes, it transformed how I looked at authors - and writing, for that matter - forever. In fact, one of the things that makes 'From Russia with Love' interesting is that it is a 007 movie made before the "Bond movie" formula was established, and noticeable differences in the storyline can be seen. But 'From Russia with Love' proved to be an equally effective, if slightly quieter little film, with more focus on the undercover espionage portion of James Bond's occupation, and less of the glamorous saving the world which would later become daily routine for him. Of course, it wasn't until the phenomenal success of Goldfinger that the Bond series really took off, and established the formula soon to be followed by every subsequent 007 movie and virtually every other action movie. No, it was only a matter of time before James Bond returned for his second installment of espionage and adventure. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though nearly half of Chicagoans came from abroad, the city’s wealth and municipal government were controlled by native-born Protestants who were unwilling to raise taxes to expand the fire department. Rapid development contributed to political division, economic stratification, and shoddy construction, he contends, as “greedy landlords who wanted to squeeze every penny they could out of their properties” wedged several wooden houses back to back on one city lot, with barely two feet between structures. In the two decades following the 1850 census, Smith notes, the city’s population grew from 30,000 to 330,000. Historian Smith ( City Water, City Life) exhaustively chronicles the 1871 fire that destroyed nearly three square miles of Chicago (out of 36 total square miles) and left approximately 90,000 people homeless. ![]() ![]() ![]() Please keep in mind that askART is not a promotional site, and accordinglyīiographical information should not be worded for purposes of 'advertising' an When submitting biographical information, we appreciate your consideration of Viewable on Fridays, but the rest of the week biographies are available only to For all others who have useful informationĪbout this artist, please email the information Please note: All biographies will be fully If you areĪ dealer or museum not currently registered, pleaseĬlick here to register, and then you may select your artist and submitĢ. Yes, Ito’s complex narrative has been devolved down to a scenario resembling a Friday the 13th sequel. The house they’re staying in is permeated with a foul odor, but that doesn’t stop Erika from inviting over a couple of horndog guys for some sexual shenanigans-which are fated to be interrupted by the horrors that will soon befall them.
